Material Hub at NZ Design Week 2026

Connecting Architects and Designers with the Right Materials

Earlier this month, the Material Hub team proudly participated in NZ Design Week 2026, one of Aotearoa’s most important events for the architecture, design, and construction industry.

Held across Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland from 2–10 March 2026, the festival brought together architects, interior designers, suppliers, manufacturers, and creative professionals to explore this year’s theme, People + Place. The programme examined how the spaces we design influence communities and how thoughtful material choices shape the way we live, work, and interact.

For Material Hub, the event was a natural fit. Our mission is to simplify how architects and designers discover materials, request samples, and connect with trusted building material suppliers across New Zealand.

A Celebration of Architecture, Materials, and Design Innovation

NZ Design Week continues to grow as a key date in the New Zealand design calendar. The event connects the construction and design community through a diverse programme of:

  • Architecture and interior design exhibitions

  • Product and material showcases from leading suppliers

  • Talks from renowned architects and designers

  • Workshops and guided design tours

  • Networking events for industry professionals

A central hub of activity was the Design Depot at Shed 10 on Auckland’s waterfront, where conversations focused on the future of sustainable construction, innovative materials, and the evolution of architectural design in Aotearoa.

For professionals working on residential and commercial projects, events like this provide inspiration, education, and opportunities to discover new material solutions.

Why Material Selection Matters in Every Project

Material selection is one of the most critical stages of any architecture or construction project. Whether designing a residential renovation, commercial space, or large-scale development, architects and designers must evaluate:

  • Performance and durability

  • Sustainability and environmental impact

  • Aesthetic qualities and finishes

  • Cost and supplier availability

Traditionally, sourcing material samples can be time-consuming. Designers often need to contact multiple suppliers, request samples individually, manage separate deliveries, and coordinate timelines. This fragmented process slows down project development and adds logistical complexity.

Material Hub was created to solve this problem.

How Material Hub Supports Architects, Designers, and Suppliers

Material Hub is a platform designed to streamline material sourcing and sampling for the construction and design industry.

Through Material Hub, professionals can:

✔ Discover Innovative Building Materials

Browse a curated selection of materials from trusted New Zealand and international suppliers, including finishes, surfaces, cladding, flooring, panels, fixtures, and specialty products.

✔ Request Multiple Samples in One Place

Instead of contacting different suppliers individually, architects and designers can request samples from multiple brands at once.

✔ Receive All Samples in a Single Delivery

Material Hub consolidates samples into one box, simplifying logistics and making the material selection process faster and more efficient.

This approach saves time, reduces packaging waste, and improves collaboration between suppliers, architects, interior designers, and homeowners.

Inspiration from Materials on Display

Throughout NZ Design Week, we saw outstanding examples of how materials influence design outcomes across architecture and interiors.

The event highlighted:

  • Textured wall finishes that add depth and character

  • Acoustic panels designed for performance and aesthetics

  • Sustainable materials developed for low‑impact construction

  • Natural stone and engineered surfaces for timeless interiors

  • Innovative tiles and cladding systems for modern façades

These exhibitions reinforced a key truth:

Materials transform design concepts into built reality.

For architects and designers, seeing and touching material samples is essential to making informed decisions. Physical samples allow professionals to assess texture, weight, colour accuracy, and compatibility with other finishes.

Strengthening Connections Between Suppliers and Design Professionals

Beyond showcasing products, NZ Design Week creates valuable opportunities for collaboration across the industry.

Suppliers gain visibility among architects and specifiers. Designers discover new materials that elevate their projects. Manufacturers connect directly with the professionals who influence purchasing decisions.

Material Hub plays a similar role year‑round by acting as a bridge between building material suppliers and the design community.

Our platform helps suppliers present their materials more effectively while making it easier for architects and designers to explore options and request samples for their projects.

By simplifying sampling logistics, we allow design professionals to focus on creativity and project delivery rather than administrative coordination.

Supporting Better Construction and Design Projects in New Zealand

As the construction industry evolves, efficiency and sustainability are becoming increasingly important. Reducing waste, improving specification processes, and centralising material sourcing are essential steps toward smarter project development.

Material Hub supports these goals by:

  • Reducing courier emissions through consolidated sample deliveries

  • Minimising excess packaging from multiple suppliers

  • Helping designers make faster, informed material decisions

  • Supporting local and international suppliers with better exposure

This contributes to more efficient workflows across architecture, interior design, and construction projects.

Looking Ahead

Attending NZ Design Week 2026 was both inspiring and energising for our team. The event highlighted the creativity, innovation, and collaboration that define New Zealand’s design and construction industry.

We are excited to continue working with architects, designers, suppliers, and homeowners across Aotearoa to simplify material discovery and improve the sampling process.

Material Hub remains committed to connecting the right materials with the right projects — making design workflows faster, easier, and more sustainable.
